Wesley Bernard York Jr., a freshman and linebacker for the Texas A&M-Commerce (TAMC) Lions football team, was arrested on December 1, 2023, by the Texas A&M-Commerce Police Department. The arrest follows an incident on the highway where York Jr. allegedly caused damage exceeding $200 to a fixture or highway landscape.
According to the Texas Transportation Code Section 550.025, the operator of a vehicle involved in a collision resulting in damage to a structure adjacent to a highway must take reasonable steps to locate and notify the owner or person in charge of the property. The operator is also required to provide their name, address, and vehicle registration number, and if requested and available, show their driver's license to the property owner.
In this case, when the police officer stopped York Jr., he allegedly provided false information about the incident. As a result, in addition to the charge of duty on striking fixture/highway landscape, York Jr. is also facing a charge of false report to a police officer.
Wesley Bernard York Jr. hails from Austin and attended Bowie High School. He was rated as a top-75 linebacker in Texas by MaxPreps this past spring. We hope that this incident is a one-time offense and that York Jr. learns from this experience.
This was the second arrest of a member of the TAMC football team the same day.
