In a bustling weekend event, the 3rd Annual Pen of 3 Commercial Heifer Show took center stage at the Sulphur Springs Civic Center. Catherine Starzyk stood out by clinching the prestigious Senior Herdsman award, impressing judges and attendees alike.
The event also highlighted Kohen Moss, who emerged victorious as the Open Division Champion, earning recognition for his exceptional expertise in the field.
A total of 14 dedicated members from Sulphur Springs FFA showcased and successfully sold their carefully raised pens of heifers. Beginning with only 4-6 head of commercial heifers, these students and their families made significant financial investments to nurture them to breeding age. Despite the challenges, their hard work paid off as the sale turned out to be a resounding success this year.
The financial rewards were substantial, with the 14 participants collectively earning a remarkable sum of $132,000. These funds will be pivotal, whether used for reinvesting in their next set of heifers or contributing to their college savings. The event not only highlighted the students' dedication and expertise but also underscored the significant financial responsibilities that come with participating in such competitions.
Reflecting on the event's significance, John Holland, the SSHS FFA Advisor, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "This is one of my favorite shows because it brings the true industry experience into the show world."
