Two Teens Die from Fentanyl, Suspect Charged in Their Deaths; Greenville Police Highlight Growing Concerns

Jessica Degarso

In recent years, the Greenville Police Department has been grappling with the dangers of the drug Fentanyl, which has made headlines across the nation. Two recent incidents have raised alarm bells within the community, emphasizing the peril posed by this potent substance.

On January 19, 2023, officers responded to a distress call at a residence in Greenville. Tragically, they discovered the lifeless body of a 16-year-old male. Preliminary information indicated that the young man had ingested what he believed to be a Percocet, a prescription medication containing acetaminophen and oxycodone. However, autopsy results revealed that his demise resulted from the toxic effects of Fentanyl.

A similarly distressing incident occurred on May 11, 2023, when officers were dispatched to another residential medical emergency. Despite the valiant efforts of medical and fire personnel, a 16-year-old male could not be revived. Subsequent autopsy findings disclosed that the victim succumbed to the toxic effects of Fentanyl and Clonazolam. Notably, Clonazolam, an analogue of the registered drug clonazepam, is not legally available in the United States. Information gathered suggested that the deceased may have purchased what he believed to be the prescription drug Xanax, along with other substances.

Following a diligent investigation, detectives gathered sufficient evidence to charge Jessica Degarso with delivering a controlled substance to a minor, with an enhancement of causing death, elevating the charge to a first-degree felony.

What is particularly disconcerting about these two cases is that neither victim was aware that they were consuming illicit street drugs. Instead, they believed they were taking prescription medications, potentially under the false assumption that these drugs were safer.

The Greenville Police Department urgently advises parents to educate their children about the inherent dangers of consuming any illicit substances. Furthermore, parents must emphasize the importance of understanding that even prescription drugs can be perilous unless they are prescribed to the user by a licensed healthcare professional and obtained from a reputable pharmacy. Fentanyl is frequently disguised as a prescription medication, and even a single tablet can prove fatal.

These two tragic incidents serve as a stark reminder of the perilous nature of Fentanyl, particularly when coupled with the age of the victims involved. Sadly, the Greenville Police Department has had to contend with numerous fatalities linked to Fentanyl and has seized numerous drugs containing this lethal substance.

It is essential for the community to recognize that Fentanyl is not solely a problem confined to larger cities—it is a pressing issue right here in our community. We must all unite to combat the deadly consequences it can inflict.
