On September 6, 2023, Hopkins County Sheriff’s deputies and Cumby Police officers were attempting to locate an individual, Charles Battles, in regards to a welfare concern for a possibly suicidal subject. Shortly after dispatch, a Cumby Police officer observed Battles traveling at a high rate speed down the I-30 North frontage road at the FM 499 overpass on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The officer activated his emergency lights and sirens and eventually caught up to Battles on I-30 Westbound near the 110 mile marker. Battles then began to intentionally and knowingly flee from law enforcement. Eventually, Battles took the 101 exit of I-30 Westbound, came to a stop, and was taken into custody without further incident.
