Manhunt in Wood County Ends as Search for White Male Suspect is Called Off, Two Have Been Arrested

Arrested: Jerome Stevenson and Shae Robinson

The Wood County Sheriff's Office concluded an intense manhunt after several hours of searching for a white male suspect who had evaded law enforcement earlier on Monday, August 21, 2023.

The incident began when reports of suspicious activity in the area of CR 3600 near Jarvis Christian University in Hawkins reached the Wood County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities issued a statement at the time urging residents in the vicinity to remain indoors while the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) prepared to deploy tracking dogs to assist in the search.

At 7:34 pm, an updated statement indicated that an African American male was in custody, while the white male subject remained at large. The white male was considered potentially dangerous, and the public was advised to exercise caution. The suspect was last seen wearing a light-colored shirt, while the African American male was described wearing a dark shirt and dark shorts. The public was strongly discouraged from approaching them and urged to call 911 immediately if spotted.

By 11:00 pm, the search was called off. Officials revealed that the arrested individuals, Jerome Stevenson and Shae Robinson, had refused to disclose the identity of the white male suspect. Stevenson faced charges including a warrant for parole violation, possession of a controlled substance, and evading arrest detention, while Robinson was charged with evading arrest detention.

The white male suspect had ignited a fire in a wooded area before eluding law enforcement, a significant detail in the case. The fire was swiftly contained by the Hawkins Fire Department. Authorities believed the suspect had escaped the immediate vicinity, possibly with the help of a waiting vehicle.
