Three Rockwall Firefighters Receive Lifesaving Award

Captain Lewis Johnson, Firefighter Clay Crawford and Firefighter Bogdan Rusmanica

At a recent City Council meeting the Rockwall Fire Department presented a Lifesaving Award to Captain Lewis Johnson, Firefighter Bogdan Rusmanica, and Firefighter Clay Crawford. The incident happened at the weekly Farmers Market when the patient suddenly collapsed. Employees from the Rockwall Parks and Recreation Department, Rockwall Police Department, Rockwall County EMS and Rockwall Fire Department helped in saving the life of the patient.

"We are extremely proud of their heroic response and the teamwork everyone provided to save the patient’s life.", posted the Rockwall Fire Department in a statement.

The incident took place on July 1, 2023, at 7:09 AM, in the 100 block of E. Rusk Street. The Rockwall Fire Department's EN01 "A" shift crew rushed to the scene after receiving a report of an unconscious individual. Upon arrival, they found members of the Rockwall Police Department already engaged in CPR on a male patient. The man had been in the process of setting up his booth when he suddenly collapsed.

Working in close collaboration with Rockwall County EMS personnel, the first responders continued their efforts to resuscitate the patient. During the course of their care, the team administered a defibrillation procedure, which resulted in the detection of a palpable pulse and an improved respiratory rate. These positive signs indicated a promising turn in the patient's condition.

Following their dedicated and coordinated intervention, Rockwall County EMS transported the patient to a local hospital for further treatment. Remarkably, the individual's recovery progress was rapid and substantial. He was discharged from the hospital just a few days after the incident, having suffered no lasting deficits as a result of the medical emergency.
