Woman Arrested for Theft of Alcoholic Beverages at Walmart in Sulphur Springs

Kathy Nelson

The Sulphur Springs Police Department responded to a reported theft at the Walmart located off Broadway, resulting in the arrest of Kathy Nelson, 61, a resident of Sulphur Springs.

At approximately 3:20 pm, August 12, 2023, officers were dispatched to the Walmart store after receiving reports of a theft. Walmart Asset Protection personnel had identified a female suspect on surveillance footage allegedly stealing approximately $200 worth of merchandise, with the majority of the items being alcoholic beverages.

Upon arrival, officers were briefed by Walmart's security personnel, who reported that the female suspect had been captured on camera walking past the final point of sale without attempting to pay for the items. The store employees observed the suspect discreetly loading the stolen merchandise into a vehicle and managed to record the license plate number.

Subsequent checks revealed that the vehicle was registered to a local address. Officers promptly proceeded to the listed address and confirmed the presence of the vehicle at the residence. The suspect, later identified as Kathy Nelson, was found still wearing the same clothing seen on the surveillance footage at the Walmart store.

After being read her Miranda rights, Nelson expressed her willingness to speak with the officers. She admitted to the theft of the alcoholic beverages and revealed that the stolen items were intended for a gathering later in the day.

Kathy Nelson was taken into custody by the Sulphur Springs Police Department and subsequently booked into the Hopkins County Jail. She now faces charges of Theft of Property valued between $100 and $750.
