GREENVILLE, Texas - Mosquitoes collected in Greenville's Bourland area have tested positive for West Nile virus, prompting the city to schedule mosquito spraying for three consecutive evenings.
The City of Greenville said spraying will take place Wednesday, Sept. 23, through Friday, Sept. 25. Crews are expected to begin around dusk, with spraying conducted between approximately 7 and 9 p.m., weather permitting.
Residents in the affected area are advised to remain indoors while spraying is underway.
The positive mosquito test does not mean a human case of West Nile virus has been confirmed. The city announcement only reported detection of the virus in trapped mosquitoes in the Bourland area.
City officials are also encouraging residents to take precautions against mosquito bites. Recommended measures include using EPA-registered insect repellents containing DEET on exposed skin and clothing when outdoors. Repellents with higher concentrations of DEET generally provide protection for longer periods.
Clothing can also be treated with permethrin, which can remain effective through several washings. Permethrin should not be applied directly to the skin, and insect repellent should not be applied underneath clothing.
