COMMERCE, Texas. A juvenile was taken into custody Friday morning after allegedly stealing a vehicle and leading officers on a brief pursuit before fleeing on foot, according to the Commerce Police Department.
Police received a report at approximately 8:24 a.m. on July 10 that a vehicle had just been stolen from the 800 block of Culver Street.
Officers with the Commerce Police Department and East Texas A&M University Police Department immediately responded to the area and began searching for the stolen vehicle.
Authorities located the vehicle at approximately 8:32 a.m., prompting a vehicle pursuit. Investigators said the suspect fled from law enforcement in the vehicle before abandoning it and running on foot.
After a brief foot pursuit, officers located and detained the juvenile suspect.
Because the suspect is a juvenile, police did not release identifying information.
Commerce Police Chief Corley Weatherford praised the officers and detectives involved in the response, saying their quick actions allowed the victim's vehicle to be recovered and a suspect to be identified within minutes.
The investigation remains ongoing.
