Michael Douglas Ruff

HOPKINS COUNTY, Texas - The Hopkins County Sheriff's Office announced the recovery of a large amount of stolen property and the arrest of a suspect following a burglary investigation in the Aberfoyle area.

Authorities said Sgt. Drew Fisher and Deputy Hayden Hollon responded on Monday, May 25th, to a burglary call on County Road 4724.

When deputies arrived, investigators discovered several items had been stolen from a building, including a Scag zero-turn mower, a gun safe, power tools, and other personal property.

While processing the scene, investigators quickly developed leads and began tracking a suspect, according to officials.

Through the investigation, deputies identified Michael Douglas Ruff as the primary suspect.

On the morning of May 26, investigators executed a search warrant at a Hopkins County property connected to the case.

During the search, authorities recovered nearly all of the stolen property reported in the burglary.

Investigators also discovered a small amount of suspected methamphetamine and marijuana at the property.

In addition, law enforcement located a four-wheeler that had been reported stolen in Coal County nearly a decade ago in 2017.

Ruff was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Hopkins County Jail.

He is currently charged with burglary of a building and possession of a controlled substance penalty group 1 under one gram.

Authorities said the investigation remains active and additional charges are expected.

The sheriff’s office also credited the Northeast Texas Auto Theft Task Force for assisting in the investigation.
