Tawakoni Firefighter Suspended Amid Criminal Investigation, Chief Says

TAWAKONI, Texas — The Tawakoni Fire Department has suspended one of its members after learning the individual is under criminal investigation, according to Fire Chief Chris Burkett.

In a statement, Chief Burkett said the department was notified March 21, 2026, that a member was facing potential criminal charges. Officials said they were not provided details about the nature or scope of the allegations at that time.

The department’s Executive Board met March 23 to review the situation. During that meeting, Burkett made a motion to suspend the member from active duty pending further information. The board approved the motion, and the firefighter was immediately placed on suspension.

Fire officials said all applicants are required to undergo a background check and drug screening before being accepted into the department. The member in question passed both requirements, and no felony convictions were found during the background check.

The department said it has not received any additional details regarding the investigation or potential charges.

Officials emphasized the department’s commitment to professionalism and accountability and said they will continue to cooperate with authorities as more information becomes available.
