The incident occurred on August 6, 2023, at approximately 4:00 am, in the 700 block of Texas St. in Sulphur Springs, Texas.

Authorities were alerted to the scene following a distress call reporting a person bleeding and lying in the road. Upon arrival, officers discovered a critically injured man, later identified as Giovanni Lopez. Preliminary investigations by the Sulphur Springs Police Department revealed that Mr. Lopez had been run over by another individual, identified as Juan Hernandez-Ruiz.

Further probing into the matter unraveled a troubling sequence of events. It was revealed that Hernandez-Ruiz and the victim, Lopez, had engaged in a prior altercation. What began as a heated exchange escalated into a devastating tragedy.

Lopez was promptly rushed to a nearby hospital in an attempt to save his life. Despite the best efforts of medical personnel, he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

Juan Hernandez-Ruiz was apprehended by law enforcement officers and taken into custody. He was transported to the Hopkins County Sheriff's Office, where he faces a charge of murder in connection with the death of Giovanni Lopez.  Hernanez-Ruiz's bond has been set at $2 million.
