On the evening of August 5th, 2023, the Sulphur Springs Police Department responded to a report of a reckless driver and swiftly located the vehicle in question at Hillcrest Drive. What initially appeared to be a routine traffic stop quickly escalated when officers encountered the driver, identified as Clarence Steptoe, and detected the strong scent of alcohol emanating from him.
Upon making contact with Mr. Steptoe, officers observed him exhibiting signs of impairment, including blurred speech and glossy, bloodshot eyes. A search of the vehicle revealed an open alcohol container within close proximity to the driver. To ascertain his level of intoxication, Mr. Steptoe agreed to perform Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFSTs).
Regrettably for Mr. Steptoe, the results of the SFSTs provided sufficient evidence to warrant his arrest for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI). The decision was made to take him to Christus Mother Frances Hospital, where medical personnel conducted a blood draw specimen to ascertain his blood alcohol content accurately.
Following the blood draw, law enforcement officials transported Clarence Steptoe to the Hopkins County Jail, where he was booked on charges related to his alleged DWI offense.
