Officer-Involved Shooting Reported in Commerce; Suspect Hospitalized

COMMERCE, Texas — A public safety response in Commerce on Monday morning led to an officer-involved shooting involving local and university police.

According to the Commerce Police Department, officers were dispatched around 8:16 a.m. to a report of a man with a gun. Officers from the East Texas A&M University Police Department responded to assist.

During the response, an officer-involved shooting occurred. Authorities confirmed the suspect was armed at the time of the incident.

The individual involved was transported to a hospital for medical treatment. No officers were injured.

The scene has been secured, and officials say there is no ongoing threat to the community.

The investigation is being handled by the Texas Rangers. In line with standard procedure, the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave.

Commerce Police Chief Corley Weatherford stated that the names of the officers and the suspect will not be released at this time. Additional information will be provided by the investigating agency as it becomes available.
