Former Greenville ISD Employee Facing Charges for Alleged Misconduct with Student

Lakenya Harris

GREENVILLE, Texas—A former support staff member at Greenville Middle School is facing a warrant for her arrest after an investigation into allegations of physical misconduct involving a special education student.

According to a statement from Superintendent Dr. Joe Lopez, the Greenville Independent School District (GISD) Police Department issued the warrant on Friday.

The suspect has been identified as Lakenya Dwynette Harris, 53, a paraprofessional who worked in a special needs classroom at Greenville Middle School. She has been charged with injury to a child. Her bond was set at $75,000.

The district began an internal investigation immediately after a parent reported concerns about the staff member's conduct. GISD administration also notified Child Protective Services (CPS) and the GISD Police Department.

The individual resigned in lieu of termination. GISD has also reported the misconduct to the State Board of Educator Certification, which may result in sanctions against the employee's certificate.

"Greenville ISD takes all misconduct seriously and remains committed to providing a safe, respectful, and supportive learning environment for every student," Dr. Lopez said. The district stated that while privacy laws prevent the release of specific details, it has acted "promptly, transparently, and in accordance with our policies and all applicable laws."
