Man Shoots Leon County Deputy, Kills Parents; Incident Ends in Suspected Suicide

A Leon County Sheriff’s Deputy was shot and multiple people were found dead following a welfare check that turned into a standoff on Saturday, June 21.

Deputies with the Leon County Sheriff’s Office and a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Trooper responded to a call concerning a suicidal subject who claimed to have killed his parents. The call led law enforcement to a residence in the 21000 block of County Road 456 in Normangee.

As deputies attempted to make contact at the home, the suspect — identified as 38-year-old James Scott Grigory — opened fire, striking a Leon County deputy twice, once in the face and once in the arm.

A perimeter was established and additional agencies responded. The wounded deputy was airlifted for emergency medical care. Authorities issued a reverse 911 alert to residents in the area, advising them to shelter in place.

The DPS SWAT Team and Texas Rangers arrived at the scene and assumed control of the operation.

Simultaneously, a welfare check was conducted at a second location in Harris County, where Grigory’s mother was found deceased with apparent gunshot wounds.

Later, DPS SWAT made entry into the Leon County residence. Inside, they discovered Grigory’s father and two dogs dead from gunshot wounds. Grigory was also found dead from what investigators believe to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Texas Rangers are leading the investigation into the Leon County incident.
