Greenville to Replace 14,000 Water Meters with Advanced AMI System Starting Summer 2025

Beginning in the summer of 2025, the City of Greenville will initiate a major infrastructure project to upgrade or replace approximately 14,000 water meters across the city as part of a transition to an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system. The project will include all residential, commercial, and industrial water meters and aims to modernize the city’s water billing and monitoring capabilities.

The project will be carried out by the City of Greenville’s Meter Division in partnership with Core and Main, a company specializing in waterworks infrastructure. The work is expected to continue for several months, with crews working weekdays and possibly some Saturdays to expedite the installation process.

Overview of the Upgrade

The current manual-read meters will be replaced with AMI meters, which will transmit water usage data electronically to fixed base devices. This eliminates the need for city personnel to physically read meters, reducing the risk of errors, saving fuel, and improving overall efficiency in billing and operations.

Many of the city’s existing meters have exceeded their estimated service life of 15 years and may no longer be accurately measuring water usage. Replacing them will help ensure accurate billing and allow both the city and residents to better monitor water consumption.

What Residents Can Expect

  • Notification: Customers will receive a knock on the door at the time of installation. There is no need to be home for the replacement to occur.

  • Temporary Service Interruption: Water service will be temporarily interrupted for 15 to 30 minutes during the meter change.

  • Installation Teams: Workers from Core and Main and the City of Greenville Meter Division will be performing the installations. Crews will wear uniforms or safety vests marked with the logos of TEX Specialty Services, Core and Main, or the City of Greenville.

  • No Cost to Customers: There will be no charge to customers for the new meters.

Special Notice for Commercial Accounts

All commercial property owners will be contacted directly by city representatives to schedule a time for their meter replacement. The city noted it will make every effort to avoid disrupting business operations.

Benefits of the New AMI System

  • Accurate Billing: Improves the precision of water usage data.

  • Leak Detection: Allows the city and residents to detect leaks or backflows quickly.

  • Operational Efficiency: Reduces the need for manual meter reading and field visits.

  • Improved Customer Service: Customers will have access to more detailed usage information in the future.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Will my water bill increase? Not necessarily. However, older meters may underreport usage, so some customers could see a more accurate (and potentially higher) bill.

  • Do I need to be home? No. The work will be done during regular business hours, and crews will notify you before beginning.

  • Will I be charged for the upgrade? No. The new meter is provided and installed at no cost to the customer.
