A disturbing incident unfolded yesterday afternoon when officers from the Sulphur Springs Police Department responded to a welfare check on Church St. Upon arrival, they discovered a minor child with visible bruises on their body. The child's mother alleged that the injuries were caused by Jonathan Toney, a 36-year-old resident of Sulphur Springs.
According to the police report, the officers engaged in conversation with the child's mother, who was waiting outside the residence with her child. The child bore several bruises, prompting the mother to attribute the harm to Toney. The child recounted to the officers that Toney had forcefully grabbed their arm and thrown them onto a couch. The situation escalated when the child revealed that Toney had also grabbed them around the neck, causing pain and restricting their breathing.
The mother, who had retrieved the child from inside the house after hearing their cries, noticed the bruises upon their return. She confirmed that the child had not exhibited any signs of injury before entering the residence. Disturbingly, as officers continued their conversation, additional bruises appeared on the child's skin.
Meanwhile, another officer engaged Toney in a discussion inside the residence. Toney displayed signs of impairment, potentially influenced by alcohol. When questioned about the incident, he evaded giving specific details and claimed it was merely a verbal argument. However, Toney did admit to engaging in roughhousing with the minor child, stating that he had grabbed them around the ribs and thrown them on the couch.
Subsequently, Toney was taken into custody and transported to the Hopkins County Jail. He was officially charged with Injury to a Child, specifically Reckless Bodily Injury. Following his arrest, Toney was read his Miranda rights, which he acknowledged, and expressed his willingness to speak with the officers regarding the incident.
Authorities are taking the allegations seriously and are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of the minor child involved.
