In a routine patrol on the evening of July 6, 2023, a Hopkins County Sheriff's Office Texas deputy made a startling discovery that led to the arrest of a man for possession of a controlled substance. The incident took place shortly after 9:15 pm in the vicinity of FM 499 near the North service road.
The deputy noticed a vehicle parked in the truck parking area with a male occupant slumped over the console. Concerned for the individual's welfare, the deputy decided to conduct a welfare check. As he approached the vehicle, it became apparent that the man was unconscious, with his pants down and a can of canned air resting in his lap.
Recognizing the need for assistance, the deputy called for backup. Another deputy arrived at the scene, and together they woke the male and requested that he exit the vehicle. During their interaction, the deputies noticed several indicators that aroused suspicion. The man appeared to be slurring his speech, exhibited signs of nervousness, and avoided making eye contact.
Upon questioning, the male claimed he was merely sleeping. However, his responses raised further doubts. When asked about the presence of marijuana in the vehicle, he swiftly denied any involvement. However, when questioned about the possible existence of methamphetamine, his demeanor changed. He broke eye contact and hesitated before ultimately admitting to its presence.
Prompted by this admission, the deputies conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle. Their search yielded significant evidence, including a crystal-like substance believed to be methamphetamine. The illicit substance was found in a clear baggie within the center console, alongside a syringe and a scale. The deputies also discovered the driver's license of the male, identifying him as Cas Edwards of Mustang, Oklahoma.
Field tests confirmed that the crystal-like substance was indeed methamphetamine. The approximate weight of the seized substance was recorded as 45.22 grams. As a result of these findings, Cas Edwards, 47, was placed under arrest and subsequently booked into the Hopkins County Jail.
Edwards now faces a charge of Possession of a Controlled Substance, specifically between 1 and 4 grams, but less than 200 grams. This offense is classified as a Felony of the Second Degree, carrying potentially severe legal consequences.
