Shortly before 3:00 am on the morning of July 4, 2023, Hopkins County Sheriff's Office Texas deputies responded to County Road 1186 for a reported disturbance. Upon arriving at the scene and engaging with all parties involved, it was revealed that Joanne Jackson had allegedly threatened to strike her daughter, who resided at the residence, on the head with an iPad. Following the initial altercation, the individuals separated into different rooms within the house.

A short while later, Jackson's daughter and her fiancé heard a gunshot originating from Jackson's bedroom. Concerned for their safety, as well as the safety of their child, the fiancé took precautionary measures by placing a handgun in his back pocket and proceeded to check on Jackson. Upon entering her bedroom, the fiancé claimed that Jackson quickly threw off the covers and charged at him. In response, the fiancé drew his weapon and pointed it towards the ground in front of Jackson. Law enforcement was subsequently contacted.

During their interactions with all parties involved, the responding deputies detected the smell of alcohol emanating from Jackson. Based on their investigation, it was determined that Jackson was the primary aggressor in the incident. Jackson cooperated with the deputies and directed them to the location within the residence where the firearm had been discharged. Deputies observed a fresh bullet hole in the ceiling of Jackson's closet.

Following the events, Joanne Jackson, a 52-year-old resident of Sulphur Springs, was taken into custody and transported to Hopkins County Jail. She has been booked on the charge of Aggravated Assault Date/Family/Household with Weapon.
