Greenville Police Officer Killed in Line of Duty During Pursuit

Officer Cooper Dawson

The Greenville Police Department has announced the tragic death of 27-year-old Officer Cooper Dawson, who was killed in the line of duty on Monday, November 25, 2024.

At approximately 7:40 p.m., Officer Dawson initiated a traffic stop in the 3500 block of Pickett Street, which led to a foot pursuit. While chasing the suspect behind 3517 Pickett Street, Officer Dawson was ambushed as he rounded the corner and shot multiple times. Despite his critical injuries, Officer Dawson displayed exceptional courage and returned fire, striking the suspect.  While wounded, Dawson applied a tourniquet to himself in an attempt to stop the bleeding.

Both Officer Dawson and the suspect were transported to Hunt County Regional Hospital. Officer Dawson was later airlifted to Medical City Plano, where he succumbed to his injuries.

This marks the first line-of-duty death for the Greenville Police Department in over 100 years. Officer Dawson was a respected officer who previously served with the Garland Police Department before joining Greenville PD.

"We are heartbroken over the loss of Officer Cooper Dawson, who selflessly put his life on the line to serve and protect our community," said Greenville Police Chief Chris Smith. "We ask that you keep Officer Dawson’s family, our department, and the Greenville community in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time."

The Garland Police Department posted the following statement: "Cooper was more than just a Greenville Police Officer; he was a friend to many here at the Garland Police Department, a devoted husband, father, and a loving family man. He wore the Garland PD badge with pride for seven years, dedicating himself to the safety and well-being of our community and Greenville PD."

Details regarding memorial services and ways to support Officer Dawson's family will be shared in the coming days.
