In a series of separate incidents on June 24, 2023, the Sulphur Springs Police Department (SSPD) apprehended two individuals for public intoxication, as they posed a potential risk to themselves and others. Luis Castro, 40, and Jason Wells, 52, both residents of Sulphur Springs, were taken into custody and subsequently booked into Hopkins County Jail.
The first incident occurred around 6:15 pm when SSPD officers on patrol near the intersection of Texas Street and Beasley Street noticed a person emitting a strong smell of alcohol. The individual, later identified as Luis Castro, exhibited glassy eyes, slurred speech, and an unsteady gait. Concerned for his safety and that of those around him, officers conducted Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, which confirmed their suspicions. Castro was determined to be intoxicated in a public place to a degree that posed a threat to himself and others.
As a result, Luis Castro was charged with public intoxication and subsequently transported to Hopkins County Jail for processing.
Later on the same evening, SSPD officers encountered another individual exhibiting concerning behavior in the 600 block of Gilmer Street. The person, identified as Jason Wells, displayed dilated pupils consistent with narcotic usage. Wells engaged in nonsensical conversations about nonexistent entities, rendering him unable to maintain a coherent dialogue or respond to inquiries. The arrest report noted intermittent bouts of agitation followed by periods of calmness.
Based on these observations, the officers determined that Jason Wells was intoxicated in a public place to a degree that endangered both himself and others. Consequently, Wells was taken into custody and transported to Hopkins County Jail.
Jason Wells, 52, was charged with public intoxication as a result of his erratic behavior.
