In a routine patrol conducted by a Cumby Police Department officer on June 25, 2023, a woman was arrested for multiple drug-related charges after being stopped in the eastbound Roadside Park on I-30.

Shortly before 1:30 p.m., the officer observed a vehicle exiting the Roadside Park and conducted a license plate check, which revealed that the vehicle's registration had expired in 2020. Acting upon this information, the officer initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle, bringing it to a halt near the 119MM on I-30 eastbound.

Upon speaking with the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, identified as Karen Zajicek, the officer made a startling discovery. Open alcoholic beverage containers were observed within Zajicek's immediate reach, prompting further investigation. Zajicek also voluntarily admitted to having marijuana inside the vehicle.

With probable cause established, the officer conducted a thorough search of the vehicle. The search yielded approximately 0.908 ounces of suspected marijuana, roughly 5.30 grams of an edible gummy believed to contain THC, and approximately 5 grams of suspected methamphetamines.

Following the discovery of the illicit substances, Karen Zajicek, a 51-year-old resident of South Carolina, was taken into custody without incident. She was subsequently booked into the Hopkins County Jail, facing several charges related to drug possession within a Drug-Free Zone.

The charges against Karen Zajicek include:

  1. Possession of Marijuana <2oz DFZ (MA)
  2. Possession of Controlled Substance PG 2 >4g <400g DFZ (F1)
  3. Possession of Controlled Substance PG 1 >4g <200g DFZ (F1)
