On September 18, 2024, at approximately 8:48 p.m., a Hopkins County Deputy conducted a routine patrol and initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle lacking a license plate.
Upon approaching the vehicle, the deputy discovered that the driver had an active arrest warrant. During the stop, the driver admitted to possessing drug paraphernalia inside the vehicle. He was handcuffed, and the passenger was also removed from the vehicle.
The passenger, identified as Beverly Kay Smith, retrieved drug paraphernalia from her bra. Further investigation uncovered crystal methamphetamine beneath the passenger seat and a digital scale with methamphetamine in the glove compartment.
Both individuals were informed of their rights and neither claimed ownership of the narcotics. An ambulance was called to assess them for potential drug-related health issues. After medical clearance, Smith was transported to the Hopkins County Jail, where additional crystal methamphetamine was found concealed in her bra.
The methamphetamine found in the vehicle totaled 0.084 grams, while the substance discovered in Smith’s bra weighed 0.210 grams. Smith was booked on charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1, less than 1 gram, with a second-degree felony designation. The charges were enhanced due to being in a drug-free zone.
