Royse City Police Detain 16-Year-Old in Accidental Shooting Death of 18-Year-Old

Royse City Police Department has detained a 16-year-old juvenile in connection with the shooting death of 18-year-old Alexander Villegas. The incident occurred on August 30, 2024, at a residence in Royse City.

Initially, it was reported that Villegas's death resulted from an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound. However, physical evidence did not support this initial claim. Following a detailed investigation, including a search warrant at the scene and re-interviews with three juveniles present, detectives determined that the shooting was caused by a 16-year-old friend of Villegas. The firearm was allegedly handled negligently when it discharged, striking Villegas.

The shooting is still considered accidental, but the 16-year-old, whose identity is withheld, has been charged with Criminally Negligent Homicide, a State Jail Felony. No further information is available at this time.
