Severe Storms Ravage Como Area, Hopkins County: Straight Line Winds and Microbursts Cause Extensive Damage

The recent onslaught of severe storms tore through the Como area, leaving behind a trail of destruction. According to a survey conducted by the National Weather Service (NWS), the damage was primarily caused by a combination of powerful straight line winds and microbursts.

The first signs of devastation were discovered west of Como on FM 1567, where two homes experienced minor roof damage. Additionally, numerous trees in the vicinity were uprooted or significantly damaged, demonstrating the ferocity of the storm. As the weather system progressed southeast, scattered tree damage was observed both in and east of Como, further emphasizing the intensity of the winds.

However, it was an embedded microburst that unleashed its full force on a county-owned facility located on Highway 11, causing substantial damage to metal buildings. The Como-Pickton Independent School District (ISD) facilities were also not spared from the destructive wrath of the microburst. Buildings within the ISD complex suffered significant harm, leaving officials to assess the extent of the repairs required.

Meteorologists from the NWS estimated that the maximum winds in the affected area reached approximately 95 mph at the ISD facilities. This estimation was corroborated by a local weather station, which recorded wind speeds of 87 mph to the east of Como. Such powerful gusts, characteristic of a microburst, can cause severe damage in a localized area due to their intense downdrafts.

Residents of the Como area are now left to deal with the aftermath of the storm, as they survey the damage and begin the process of recovery. The affected homeowners, in particular, will need to address the roof damage suffered during the storm.

The Hopkins County emergency management authorities have been working diligently to assess the situation and provide support to those affected. Local agencies are collaborating to restore power, clear debris, and ensure the safety of the community.
