Theft at Sulphur Springs Walmart Foiled: Suspect Caught with Secret Barcode Trick

On Monday, March 18th, 2024, the Sulphur Springs Police Department (SSPD) responded to a theft report at the Walmart store at approximately 3:16 PM.

Upon arrival, officers encountered the suspect, identified as Max Thomas Chapman, in the company of Walmart Asset Protection personnel within the store's asset protection office. Security footage revealed Chapman concealing a separate barcode in his hand and using it to scan two items with a total value of $249.00.

Following protocol, the officer informed Chapman of his Miranda rights, which he acknowledged understanding. Chapman confessed to manipulating the barcode, admitting to the theft, attributing it to a mistake.

Subsequently, Chapman was taken into custody, placed in double-locked handcuffs, and transported to Hopkins County Jail. He has been charged with Theft.
