A Hopkins County Deputy made a significant arrest after a routine stop escalated into a pursuit through the streets of Como. The incident began when the deputy noticed a subject riding a bicycle without lights in the 100 block of Gaskins in Como.
According to reports, the deputy stopped the individual and requested identification. However, the subject provided a name and date of birth that didn't match any records. Sensing something amiss, the deputy attempted to conduct a records check through Communications but was unable to find any information on the individual.
As the deputy sought additional information from the subject, the situation quickly intensified. The subject fled northbound on Gaskins, leaving the bicycle behind near Velasco Transportation. The suspect then proceeded to run through the business yard toward 1st Street.
Deputies initiated a pursuit on foot, repeatedly ordering the subject to stop. After a brief standoff, the individual finally halted in the middle of 1st Street but refused to comply with commands to get on the ground. In response, Deputiest deployed a TASER to subdue the subject.
Despite initial resistance, deputies managed to restrain and arrest the individual. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the suspect had provided a false name initially. The individual was later identified as 34-year-old Gregory Cash Chappell.
Chappell was found to have an outstanding warrant issued by the U.S. Marshals for violation of parole related to possession of dangerous drugs. In addition to the warrant, Chappell faces charges of evading arrest detention and providing false information with the intent to conceal his identity.
