On February 16, 2024, at 6:23 p.m., three inmate workers at the Kaufman County Law Enforcement Center experienced a medical emergency. Jail staff promptly responded by administering lifesaving measures. Naloxone, a medication for opiate overdoses, was given, and CPR was initiated.
Two inmates were taken to a local hospital in stable condition, while one was transported to a Dallas area hospital in critical condition.
The Texas Rangers were called to assist Kaufman County Sheriff’s Investigators in the investigation, highlighting the need for a thorough examination of the incidents. Jail policies and procedures are under review.
Since January 1, 2021, the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office has trained all employees on the use of intranasal naloxone as part of its policy to aid those experiencing opioid overdoses.
The collaboration between jail staff, medical professionals, and law enforcement underscores efforts to ensure inmate well-being.
