Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Arrests of a Couple in Hopkins County

On Sunday, February 18, 2024, a Hopkins County Deputy observed a vehicle traveling north on SH 154 S. The vehicle's Texas license plate was provided to Communications. Communications advised the vehicle's registration expired in 2022.

A traffic stop was conducted of the vehicle for the vehicle violation. The vehicle took an extended time to pull over. Deputies made contact with Jeffrey Lynn Hicks who was the driver and the passenger Melaney Ann Tennison. Tennison was observed to show signs of nervousness. Deputies requested both subjects exit the vehicle. Hicks granted consent to search the vehicle. Deputies located a small clear baggie in the center console containing suspected methamphetamine residue. Neither subject claimed the baggie. Deputies further located two plastic tubes containing suspected methamphetamine residue in Tennison's purse.

The residue in one tube field tested positive for methamphetamine. Both subjects were placed in custody and secured into double locked handcuffs. Hicks was transported to the HCSO Jail. While waiting for the wrecker, Tennison admitted to having narcotics on her person. Deputies allowed Tennison to retrieve the narcotics. Tennison produced a clear baggie containing a white powdery substance suspected to be cocaine. Tennison was transported to the HCSO Jail.

The white powdery substance field tested positive for cocaine and weighed approximately 1.728 grams.
