North Texas Sheriffs Combat Illegal Narcotics and Human Trafficking

Seven North Texas sheriffs joined forces in December 2017 to combat the surge of illegal narcotics and human trafficking in the region. Led by Collin County Sheriff Jim Skinner, the collaborative effort included sheriffs from Grayson, Hunt, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, and Wise counties. Their initiative led to the establishment of the North Texas Criminal Interdiction Unit (NTXCIU), which commenced operations in January 2018.

The NTXCIU, comprising specially trained deputy sheriffs, is dedicated to intercepting dangerous drugs, contraband, and human cargo along established smuggling corridors across North Texas. Deputies in the unit possess jurisdictional authority to operate and make arrests within any of the participating counties.

Since its inception, the NTXCIU has expanded its operations, welcoming the Smith County Sheriff's Office in July 2018 under Sheriff Larry Smith's leadership. Additionally, leadership changes occurred in Hunt and Rockwall counties due to retirements, with Sheriff Terry Jones succeeding Sheriff Randy Meeks and Sheriff Terry Garrett succeeding Sheriff Harold Eavenson, respectively. Parker County also saw a change in leadership following the passing of Sheriff Larry Fowler, with Sheriff Russ Authier taking the reins.

Notably, the unit has broadened its scope to include activities at the DFW International Airport in collaboration with the Department of Homeland Security.

Providing an operational update, the NTXCIU has achieved significant results. Since its inception, the unit has seized a staggering $7.9 million in hidden bulk cash (U.S. currency) along with substantial quantities of narcotics, including marijuana, methamphetamine, cocaine, THC extract, heroin, prescription narcotics, and fentanyl. Furthermore, they have recovered 119 stolen motor vehicles and confiscated over 60 weapons and ammunition.

The collaborative efforts of these sheriffs have made substantial strides in curbing illegal activities, ensuring the safety and security of North Texas communities.
