Deputies from the Hopkins County Sheriff's Office conducted a routine traffic stop on a Chevrolet vehicle on FM 275 north near CR 4730. The stop was initiated due to a defective license plate light on the driver's side of the vehicle.
Upon making contact with the driver, identified as Amanda Jones, deputies detected a strong odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle. As a result, all occupants, including Jones and backseat passenger 54-year-old Lyle Mahoney of Point, TX, were asked to exit the vehicle.
During the exit, Jones voluntarily produced a clear baggie containing marijuana from her person. Notably, Mahoney, upon exiting the vehicle, exhibited furtive movements near his left jacket pocket. Subsequently, deputies observed a clear glass pipe commonly used for smoking methamphetamine on the ground, with Mahoney attempting to discreetly push it under the vehicle.
A probable cause search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a brown wax substance identified by Jones as THC Wax, located in her purse. Additionally, a key chain vial found in possession of front seat passenger Lora Sutherland contained a crystal-like residue believed to be methamphetamine.
Following the investigation, Sutherland was informed of her Miranda rights, after which she initially denied possessing anything illegal on her person. However, she later admitted to concealing contraband in her bra. Similarly, Jones revealed the presence of a meth pipe in her pants.
All three individuals—Lora Sutherland, Lyle Mahoney, and Amanda Jones—were taken into custody and transported to the Hunt County Jail. They face various charges, including possession of controlled substances, possession of drug paraphernalia, and additional traffic-related offenses.
