Fatal Crash in U.S. Highway 69 in East Texas Work Zone Claims One Life

A tragic incident unfolded on U.S. Highway 69 late Tuesday afternoon, resulting in a fatal crash within a designated work zone. At approximately 3:52 p.m., a Kenworth 18-wheeler heading north on U.S. 69 came to a stop due to ongoing construction just north of the Jasper County line, according to a report by the Department of Public Safety (DPS).

The work zone was equipped with rumble strips, barricades, and a flagger guiding traffic, as disclosed in a statement by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). A work crew was actively present at the scene.

DPS revealed that the 18-wheeler was struck from behind by a Ford F-150. Following the impact, the pickup truck caught fire. The driver of the Ford F-150 succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene, as confirmed by DPS. The identity of the deceased has not been disclosed at this time.

TxDOT expressed sympathy to the families affected and to those who witnessed the distressing incident in an official statement. As investigations continue, DPS has not released the names of the individuals involved.

In the wake of this tragedy, authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution, adhere to posted speed limits, and comply with all traffic control measures in and around TxDOT work zones. Motorists are reminded to stay vigilant for moving equipment and personnel near travel lanes when approaching work zones and to be prepared to come to a stop if necessary.
