On November 26, 2023, Wood County Sheriff Deputies responded to a DPS assist call on Hwy 154. The call originated from a trooper on a routine traffic stop who found themselves in need of assistance.
The incident escalated when a female, identified as Courtney McKayla Cahoon of Quitman, allegedly slapped the DPS trooper and resisted arrest. As the trooper struggled to detain Cahoon, her boyfriend, Branon Elary Volentine, also of Quitman, exited the vehicle and reportedly approached the trooper in a threatening manner. Volentine is accused of making advances and issuing a threat against the trooper's life.
Law enforcement managed to take both subjects into custody. Courtney McKayla Cahoon faces charges of resisting arrest and assault on a peace officer. Branon Elary Volentine is charged with interference with public duties and making terroristic threats against a peace officer.
