PALESTINE, Texas - A 47-year-old restaurant employee has been arrested after police say he attacked a 16-year-old co-worker with a suspected box cutter during an incident at the Cotton Patch Café in Palestine.
Jose Vargas Buenrrostro was arrested Friday, Sept. 4, on a warrant charging him with aggravated assault, according to the Palestine Police Department.
The incident happened Wednesday, Sept. 2, but police said they were not notified until the following day.
Investigators said what began as horseplay between the employees escalated when Buenrrostro attacked the teenager with a bladed instrument believed to be a box cutter, cutting the teen's arm.
Police said restaurant management directed the injured teenager to treat his own wound using a medical kit at the restaurant. He was then told to finish his shift waiting tables while Buenrrostro also remained at work.
After completing his shift, the teenager was taken by a parent for medical treatment. The wound required two sutures.
A police report was filed Thursday, Sept. 3, and detectives began investigating the incident.
Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Buenrrostro on Friday and arrested him at his home in Elkhart.
Police said additional charges are possible as detectives continue investigating the incident.
