Paris Schools Embrace Mental Health Awareness Week

PJH student Ze’Keilyn Williams ask the group a question during the presentation

Students and staff across Paris Junior High, Paris High School, and Travis School of Choice engaged in an insightful session on mental health awareness this week as part of Mental Health Awareness Week, observed during the first week of October. Recognizing the significance of mental well-being alongside physical health, the event aimed to promote vital skills for maintaining good mental health and recognizing warning signs.

During lunchtime sessions, attendees had the opportunity to hear from guest speaker Julie Morris, a Trauma Informed Specialist from the Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS). Morris, along with Paris ISD Social Worker Kameshia Cooper, emphasized the importance of mental health in the overall well-being of individuals. The session provided a platform for open discussions and questions, fostering a supportive environment for both students and staff.

Sharing their personal experiences, Morris and Cooper underscored the importance of resilience in the face of life's challenges. Cooper encouraged the students, stating, "Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning to dance. I’ve learned to walk through it, and I’ve learned to dance through it. I can guarantee the storm won’t last, and you will find your strength through it all!"

Acknowledging the shared experiences surrounding mental health struggles, attendees were reassured that they are not alone. To further support those in need, students and staff were provided with valuable resources and guidance on how to reach out for help.
