A multiple-vehicle accident on October 4, 2023, left a member of the Kaufman community dead and a juvenile seriously injured. Kaufman Police Officers rushed to the scene at State Highway 34 Bypass and FM 1836/Rand Road following reports of a collision involving a passenger van, a pick-up truck, and another pick-up pulling a trailer with an excavator.
Upon arrival, authorities found the adult driver of the passenger van unresponsive. Despite efforts by Kaufman Police Officers and the Kaufman Fire Department, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Precinct #1, Judge Mary Bardin. The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of family members and confirmation by the Dallas County Medical Examiner.
A juvenile passenger from the van, who was alert but seriously injured, was swiftly transported to a Dallas Area Hospital for treatment by CareFlight Ambulance.
The drivers of both pick-up trucks involved in the accident reported no injuries. They have been cooperative with the ongoing investigation, and as of now, no criminal charges are anticipated against any of the drivers present at the scene.
The Kaufman Police Department Criminal Investigation Division is being assisted by the Texas Department of Public Safety in reconstructing the accident and conducting a thorough investigation. Investigators are actively seeking information from witnesses at the scene and are trying to locate anyone else who might have observed the crash.
