Jarvis Christian University Named Fulbright Historically Black College and University (HBCU) Institutional Leader for 2023

Jarvis Christian University is proud to announce its recognition as a Fulbright Historically Black College and University (HBCU) Institutional Leader for 2023. The U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) has honored Jarvis Christian University for its outstanding commitment to the Fulbright Program, the U.S. government's premier international academic exchange program.

This marks the second consecutive year that Jarvis Christian University has received this prestigious designation, reflecting the institution's continued dedication to fostering international academic engagement.

Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leaders are institutions that have shown exceptional support for Fulbright exchange participants and have actively promoted Fulbright program opportunities on their campuses. This recognition highlights the strength of HBCUs as desirable destinations for international students and scholars while also showcasing their rich intellectual heritage and historical significance on the global stage.

Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs, Lee Satterfield, praised the HBCUs receiving the Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leader designation in 2023, stating, "Diversity is one of America's greatest strengths, and pairing the positive power of Fulbright with the academic excellence at Historically Black Colleges and Universities provides change-making opportunities for students, scholars, and campus communities at home and abroad."

Dr. Glenell M. Lee-Pruitt, President of Jarvis Christian University, expressed gratitude for the recognition, saying, "Jarvis Christian University is honored to host Fulbright Scholars from abroad for their impact in sharing their languages, expertise, and cultures with us throughout the academic year. Our students have benefitted from taking language classes in Arabic, Mandarin, and Swahili these past two years, and our alumni, faculty, and staff enjoy engaging with the Fulbright Scholars to make their time a true cultural exchange."

Jarvis Christian University has welcomed Fulbright Scholars from various countries in recent years, including Taiwan, Tanzania, Tunisia, Morocco, Kenya, and Egypt.

As part of their commitment to international education, Jarvis Christian University will participate in a virtual workshop hosted by Fulbright on November 6, 2023. The workshop will bring together representatives from Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leaders to share best practices for utilizing Fulbright Program engagement to support students and faculty, enhance campus internationalization, host international Fulbright students and scholars, and establish global networks. This event is open to the public and is designed to benefit faculty, staff, and stakeholders at HBCUs.

The Fulbright Program, established in 1946, is the U.S. government's premier international educational exchange program. It has provided opportunities for over 400,000 individuals from diverse backgrounds and fields to study, teach, and conduct research abroad. Fulbright participants contribute to building connections and addressing global challenges through their exchange experiences.

The program receives funding from the U.S. government, as well as support from participating governments, host institutions, corporations, and foundations worldwide. It places a strong emphasis on diversity and collaborates with various stakeholders, including the White House Initiative on HBCUs, to ensure inclusivity in its initiatives.
