COMMERCE, Texas - A man accused of forcing his way into a Commerce home, holding residents at gunpoint and opening fire during an attempted robbery has been arrested after being shot by the occupants he allegedly attacked.
Commerce police responded at approximately 9 p.m. on July 27 to reports of a robbery, burglary and shooting in the 900 block of Plum Street.
When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the 1000 block of Cedar Street. Commerce Fire and EMS personnel treated the man before transporting him to a hospital.
The Commerce Police Department and Texas Rangers launched a joint investigation into the incident.
According to investigators, the wounded man, later identified as 47-year-old Michael Lamar Winton (a.k.a. Big Ike), allegedly approached a residence, forced his way inside and held the occupants at gunpoint while demanding property.
Police said Winton fired his weapon at the residents during the confrontation.
The occupants returned fire, striking Winton, who fled the residence on foot before collapsing a short distance away, authorities said.
Based on the investigation, detectives obtained arrest warrants charging Winton with Burglary of a Habitation with Intent to Commit a Felony, two counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon.
Winton was booked into the Hunt County Detention Center. He was also found to be out on parole for a previous conviction. According to court records, Winton was sentenced to 10 years in prison for Robbery in 2008. In 2020, he was arrested by Royse City Police officers for stealing a vehicle. That lead to a charge of Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle, Burglary of Building and Tampering with Physical Evidence with Intent to Impair Investigation. He was convicted in Rockwall County for those charges and sentenced to 3 years in prison.
Recently, on June 29, 2026, Winton was arrested in Dallas and charged with Theft in Priperty and Tampering with Physical Evidence with Intent to Impair Investigation. He posted bond of $12,500 and was released. That case is still pending.
The investigation remains ongoing.
