GREENVILLE, Texas — The Hunt County Sheriff's Office is mourning the loss of longtime jail social worker Ruth Simonis, who died following a medical emergency while on duty earlier this month.
According to the sheriff's office, Simonis suffered a medical emergency while working at the Hunt County Jail on June 1, 2026. She passed away on June 8 at the age of 63.
Sheriff's officials remembered Simonis as a dedicated advocate who worked tirelessly to help inmates facing difficult circumstances.
"Ruth was much more than just her title," the Hunt County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. "She served as an advocate, counselor, problem solver, and source of hope for inmates who were often facing some of the most difficult moments of their lives."
Throughout her career, Simonis helped connect inmates with mental health services, substance abuse treatment programs, housing assistance and community resources designed to support successful reentry following incarceration.
The sheriff's office said her contributions to both the agency and the people she served will not be forgotten.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with her friends, family, and co-workers," the statement said.
Simonis' family has announced that a celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 18, at Authentic Life Fellowship, located at 1914 Joe Ramsey Boulevard East in Greenville.
The service will also be streamed live through The Well Baptist Church's Facebook page for those unable to attend in person.
The Hunt County Sheriff's Office said Simonis leaves behind a lasting legacy of compassion, service and support for some of the county's most vulnerable residents.
