BONHAM, Texas - A wanted man with a history of violence surrendered Thursday afternoon after barricading himself inside a structure on a Bonham property, prompting a multi-hour SWAT response that ended without injuries, authorities said.
The incident began at approximately 1:30 p.m. on July 30, when another agency requested assistance from the Fannin County Sheriff's Office in locating 43-year-old Jay Cole Davidson, who had fled from a probation office and was wanted on an active arrest warrant.
Investigators tracked Davidson to a residence on Liberty Street in Bonham. As deputies approached, authorities said Davidson ran into a structure on the property and barricaded himself inside with 36-year-old Nyssa Matchen.
Because of Davidson's history of violence, the presence of known firearms at the property and his history of evading law enforcement and assaultive behavior, the Fannin County Sheriff's Office deployed its Special Response Team.
Deputies quickly established a secure perimeter around the property. Officials said the neighboring residences were unoccupied, allowing law enforcement to safely contain the situation while minimizing any threat to the public.
Crisis negotiators attempted for several hours to persuade Davidson to surrender peacefully, but those efforts were unsuccessful.
Authorities ultimately deployed CS gas into the structure with assistance from a Texas Department of Public Safety state trooper. Following the deployment of the chemical agent, Davidson and Matchen exited the building and surrendered without further incident.
Both suspects were taken into custody by Fannin County deputies. Officials said no one was injured during the operation beyond the temporary effects of the CS gas, and no shots were fired.
Davidson was arrested on an outstanding warrant for Evading Arrest with a Vehicle and a Deadly Weapon. Authorities also revoked his bond in a previous case. He is being held without bond at the Fannin County Jail.
Matchen was arrested on outstanding warrants for Criminal Trespass and Failure to Appear. She also faces a new charge of Resisting Arrest. A bond had not yet been set as of Thursday.
Sheriff Cody Shook said additional charges are expected as the investigation continues.
The Fannin County Sheriff's Office thanked the Texas Department of Public Safety, Bonham Police Department, Bonham Fire/EMS, Lamar County Emergency Management and the Paris Police Department for assisting during the operation, including providing drone support.
The investigation remains ongoing.
