MURPHY, Texas - A Murphy police officer has been terminated after allegations of criminal misconduct prompted an independent investigation by the Texas Rangers, city officials announced Wednesday.
The City of Murphy said it became aware of the allegations on July 24 and immediately notified the Texas Rangers, requesting an independent criminal investigation into the matter.
According to the city, the Murphy Police Department is fully cooperating with the Texas Rangers and will continue providing assistance throughout the investigation.
The officer, whose identity has not been released, was immediately placed on administrative leave while the department launched an internal administrative investigation.
City officials said the officer's employment with the Murphy Police Department was terminated effective July 29 following the completion of the administrative investigation.
"Protecting our community and maintaining the public's trust are among our highest responsibilities. We take these allegations extremely seriously and are committed to ensuring they are addressed thoroughly, fairly and with full accountability. We will continue to cooperate with the Texas Rangers," Murphy Police Chief Jeff Gibson said in a statement.
The city said its employment decision was based on the findings of its administrative investigation and applicable personnel policies.
Officials emphasized that the Texas Rangers are conducting the criminal investigation and that any decision regarding criminal charges will be made through the criminal justice process.
The City of Murphy and the Murphy Police Department said they will not comment on the specific allegations or release additional information while the criminal investigation remains underway.
The investigation remains ongoing.
