Longview Man Pleads Guilty to Federal Machine Gun Charges Tied to Graduation Party Shooting

Jamichael OQuinn

TYLER, Texas — A Longview man has pleaded guilty to federal firearms charges connected to a drive-by shooting at a high school graduation party, federal officials announced.

U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs said 21-year-old Jamichael Devorea O’Quinn pleaded guilty May 1 to two counts of possession of a machine gun before K. Nicole Mitchell.

According to court records, the case stems from a May 18, 2024, drive-by shooting near Longview. Deputies with the Gregg County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene, where eyewitnesses and victims identified O’Quinn as one of the shooters.

Investigators said O’Quinn later posted on social media, showing off a firearm equipped with a distinctive blue machine gun conversion device — commonly known as a “Glock switch” — and warned of his willingness to use it.

O’Quinn was arrested July 26, 2024, during a traffic stop in Longview. Authorities recovered a firearm outfitted with a conversion device, and ballistic testing confirmed it was the same weapon used in the shooting.

O’Quinn now faces up to 10 years in federal prison. A sentencing date will be set following a presentence investigation.

He has also been indicted in Gregg County on a separate murder charge related to an unrelated drive-by shooting. Officials noted that an indictment is not evidence of guilt.

“Our focus in this case was to bring some measure of justice for the victims of this shooting. The illegal possession of a machine gun cannot, and will not, be tolerated,” Combs said. “The families of Longview deserve to live free of fear.”

Gregg County District Attorney John Moore said his office is committed to working with partners to improve public safety.

“ATF is proud to stand alongside our local, state, and federal partners in bringing this offender to justice,” said Brian Garner. “This case highlights the real and growing danger posed by illegal machine gun conversion devices.”

Anthony Boone added, “The Longview Police Department will not tolerate illegal fully automatic weapons in our city. We will continue to utilize every available state and federal resource to combat criminal activity.”

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Longview Police Department, Gregg County Sheriff's Office, the Gregg County District Attorney’s Office and the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Dustin Farahnak and Emil Mikkelsen are prosecuting the case.
