Greenville High Students Graduate with Professional Cosmetology, Barbering Licenses

GREENVILLE, Texas — Seniors in the cosmetology and barbering program at Greenville High School are graduating this year with more than diplomas — they’re entering the workforce with professional licenses and real-world experience already in hand.

A total of 23 cosmetology students and three barbering students earned their licenses after completing program requirements, which include more than 1,000 hours of training and passing both written and practical state exams. Several students have already begun working in local salons and barbershops, building experience and clientele before graduation.

The program begins early, with students taking entrepreneurship courses as sophomores before entering a two-year training track during their junior and senior years. Inside the program, students train in a full-service environment that mirrors real industry settings.

Cosmetology students learn skills such as hair coloring, perms, lashes and acrylic nails, while barbering students focus on haircuts, designs and straight razor shaving. Both tracks emphasize foundational skills designed to prepare students for immediate employment or continued education.

For many students, the experience has been both professional and personal.

Layla Reeves said the program helped build strong friendships and a sense of connection among classmates. Julissa Ibarra said earning her license was a proud moment after two years of work and plans to use her skills to support herself through college.

Barbering student Bryant Magdaleno said the program helped him develop more structured techniques, while Gustavo Soto said he is ready to continue working in a shop after graduation.

This year also marks a milestone for the barbering program, which is completing its first full year. The three licensed barbers represent the first group to finish the program from start to finish.

Instructor Travis Lynch, who helped launch the barbering program, said watching students succeed has been rewarding. “I’m really proud of them,” he said.

The cosmetology program, led by Robbie Hunter, continues to maintain a 100% pass rate on licensing exams.

District leaders say the program reflects Greenville Independent School District’s commitment to preparing students for life after graduation — with many already stepping directly into careers before they walk the stage.
