LONGVIEW, Texas — A 5-year-old child is being credited with helping save multiple lives after alerting family members to a house fire early Friday morning in Longview.
The Longview Fire Department responded around 6:19 a.m. on April 3 to a residential structure fire at 160 Jester Circle. When crews arrived, they encountered heavy flames coming from the front of the home and immediately declared a working fire.
Firefighters launched an aggressive attack while conducting search and ventilation operations. All occupants from both 160 and 162 Jester Circle were safely outside by the time crews arrived.
According to officials, the child had been sleeping in the living room when he was awakened by a loud popping sound. He noticed flames coming from above the front door and quickly alerted others inside the home, allowing everyone to evacuate safely.
Fire officials credited the child’s quick actions with preventing injuries or worse.
Six people were displaced as a result of the fire, and the American Red Cross is assisting those affected. One person was evaluated at the scene for possible smoke inhalation but declined further treatment.
Investigators determined the fire was caused by an electrical issue originating from an outlet on the front porch that extended into the home. The residence sustained an estimated $75,000 in damage.
Officials are reminding residents to regularly inspect outdoor electrical outlets and address any signs of damage or unusual activity immediately.
