WOOD COUNTY, Texas — A Wood County deputy and a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper were shot Saturday evening while attempting to serve multiple felony warrants, leading to an hours-long standoff that ended with the suspect dead.
On February 14, 2026, Wood County deputies and DPS personnel attempted to serve six felony warrants near the intersection of F.M. 515 and F.M. 2966. During the attempt, the wanted subject began firing multiple rounds from a semi-automatic weapon at law enforcement personnel.
One Wood County deputy suffered multiple gunshot wounds, and a DPS trooper was also shot. Both were transported to a hospital in Tyler and are reported to be in critical but stable condition.
Authorities said the suspect barricaded himself inside a residence on F.M. 2966, prompting a large law enforcement response. The Wood County Special Response Team and Texas Rangers responded to the scene. Officials used multiple methods in attempts to get the suspect to surrender, including tear gas and negotiations throughout the evening.
After repeated efforts to secure a peaceful surrender, officers breached the residence. Upon entry, the suspect again attempted to fire at law enforcement, and officers returned fire. The suspect was transported to Quitman Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
During the standoff, authorities said the suspect continued firing at officers.
The suspect was wanted on the following charges: Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle; Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon; Theft of a Firearm; Evading Arrest with a Vehicle; and two separate warrants for Possession of a Controlled Substance.
The investigation remains ongoing.
