GREENVILLE, Texas - The Greenville Police Department is warning residents about a scam in which callers falsely claim to be law enforcement officers and demand cash payments.
According to police, multiple reports have been received involving individuals who contact residents and claim they missed a court date. The caller then instructs the victim to meet at the police department and bring a specific amount of cash to resolve the issue.
In many cases, the scammers use the names of real police officials and even spoof legitimate phone numbers to make the calls appear authentic. Police say this information is often pulled from publicly available sources, including social media pages and official department websites.
The Greenville Police Department emphasized that law enforcement agencies do not operate this way.
Police officers will never call to demand money, request personal or financial information, or instruct someone to bring cash to avoid arrest or resolve a missed court date. Any call making those demands is a scam.
Residents who receive such a call are urged not to provide any information or send money. Anyone who has experienced a similar incident in Greenville is encouraged to report it to the Greenville Police Department at (903) 457-2900.
Police remind the public that when in doubt, hang up and contact your local police department directly using a verified phone number.
