CHEROKEE COUNTY, Texas - The City of Rusk announced on January 16, 2026, that Scott Heagney is no longer employed by the City following an internal administrative review. Heagney had been placed on administrative leave on December 11, marking the second consecutive year he was removed from duty under similar circumstances.
City officials said the decision was made in the best interests of the City of Rusk and the community it serves. While the City does not comment on specific personnel matters, officials emphasized that appropriate administrative procedures were followed prior to the termination.
City leadership reiterated its commitment to maintaining a professional, accountable, and transparent police department. Officials stated that public safety services will continue without interruption and that steps are being taken to ensure leadership stability during the transition.
To maintain continuity, City Manager Bob Goldsberry will serve as Interim Police Chief, while Sgt. Jeremy Farmer will oversee the department’s day-to-day operations.
