Man Hospitalized After Severe Dog Attack Along Interstate 20 in Van Zandt County

A 53-year-old man remains hospitalized after suffering multiple life-threatening injuries in a dog attack Tuesday morning in Van Zandt County.

According to the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched around 11:25 a.m. on December 22 to the 28469 block of Interstate 20 in response to a reported medical emergency. When deputies arrived, they and Christus Mother Frances EMS found the victim suffering from severe dog bite injuries believed to have been caused by two adult pit bull mix dogs.

The man was initially transported to the Christus Mother Frances Emergency Room before being airlifted to UT Medical Center in Tyler for further treatment. As of Wednesday morning at 11:00 a.m., officials reported the victim remains hospitalized and is in stable condition.

During the investigation, deputies located the two dogs identified by the owner as being responsible for the attack. Authorities determined that neither animal was vaccinated. The owner voluntarily surrendered the dogs to the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office so they could be tested.

While on scene, deputies also discovered 29 additional dogs inside the residence and requested assistance from the SPCA Response Team to help address the situation.

Sheriff Bridger thanked responding deputies, Christus Mother Frances EMS, the SPCA, and the Van Police Department for their swift response and cooperation during the incident.

The investigation remains ongoing and is being conducted by the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office in coordination with the SPCA.
