Precinct One Commissioner Mitchell “Mitch” James Curtis was arrested Wednesday, December 3, and booked into the Van Zandt County Jail following a Texas Rangers investigation into allegations against him. He is charged with Official Oppression and Impersonating a Public Servant. Court documents list the offense date as June 7, 2025.
According to the indictment, Curtis pretended to be a police officer while attempting to stop a man, identified as Cole Lindsey, from firing guns on his private property. Prosecutors say Curtis used the appearance of official authority to pressure Lindsey into complying, and in doing so impeded Lindsey’s lawful right to discharge firearms on his own land. A Grand Jury returned the indictment after reviewing the evidence.
Sheriff Kevin Bridger issued a statement shortly after the arrest, emphasizing that the case will be handled with transparency and impartiality. He noted that Curtis will be treated like any other inmate and that due process will be respected.
Van Zandt County District Attorney Tonda Curry said her office was aware of the investigation early on. To avoid any potential conflict of interest, she filed a motion to recuse herself from the case. The court then appointed the Kaufman County Criminal District Attorney’s Office to oversee the prosecution.
Officials say the investigation remains ongoing. No further details have been released at this time.
